چکیده

BACKGROUND Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PMC; 1 cm. RESULTS The prevalence of extrathyroidal invasion (52.2%) and initial nodal metastasis (34.9%) in patients with PMC was surprisingly high and almost as high as that for patients with PTC (72.4% and 51.8%, respectively). The rate of recurrent or persistent disease did not differ between patients with PMC and PTC (recurrent or persistent disease, 6.1% vs 14.1%; 53.4- vs 84.2-month follow-up; n = 98 vs 647; corrected p = .112). The frequency of BRAF(V600E) mutation was similar in patients with PMC and PTC (65.6% vs 67.2%). Immunohistochemical staining showed no different expression pattern according to the tumor size. CONCLUSION These results suggest that PMC is not an occult cancer and it can act like larger PTC. Therefore, PMC should not be underestimated in practice.

Associations of the BRAFV600E Mutation with Sonographic Features and Clinicopathologic Characteristics in a Large Population with Conventional Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association of the BRAF(V600E) mutation with sonographic features and clinicopathologic characteristics in a large population with conventional papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the sonographic features, clinicopathologic characteristics, and presence of the BRAF(V600E) mutation in 688 patients who underwent thyroidectomy for conv...

Association of BRAFV600E mutation with clinicopathological features of papillary thyroid carcinoma: a study on a Chinese population.

BACKGROUND The new finding of the heterogeneous distribution of BRAF(V600E) mutation in primary papillary thyroid carcinoma suggested the percentage of BRAF(V600E) alleles should be taken into consideration when evaluating its association with clinicopathological features of papillary thyroid carcinoma. The aim of this study was to detect both the presence and the percentage of BRAF(V600E) alle...

BRAF mutation in papillary thyroid carcinoma in a Japanese population: its lack of correlation with high-risk clinicopathological features and disease-free survival of patients.

Recent studies have demonstrated that BRAF(V600E) mutation is a common event in papillary thyroid carcinoma and a majority of these lesions have shown a direct relationship between BRAF(V600E) mutation and aggressive characteristics, including a worse patient prognosis. However, there are no studies from Japan regarding this issue in a large series with adequate postoperative follow-up periods....

The relationship between the BRAFV600E mutation in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma and clinicopathologic factors

BACKGROUND The BRAF(V600E) mutation, which accounts for about 60-80% papillary thyroid carcinoma(PTC), has been identifiedas a prognostic marker for risk stratification of PTC patients. However, the BRAF(V600E) mutation as a prognostic marker in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) is unclear. METHODS We performed a retrospective review of 101 patients who underwent surgery for PTMC. We st...

The BRAF(V600E) mutation in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma: does the mutation have an impact on clinical outcome?

CONTEXT An activating mutation in the gene BRAF has been correlated with poorer prognosis and more aggressive clinical course in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). We therefore hypothesized that the good prognosis, high 5-year disease-free rate and high survival rate of patients with less aggressive papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (pT1aNo-x) would be associated with a lower incidence of the BR...
